pain and itching...what could it be?

Hi,
For months now I have had mild to severe itching on my upper genital area. It's not really near the vaginal opening, generally much higher (kind of the area surrounding the clitoris). Also, at times I have pain in the area too...generally sharp pains if my pants hit the wrong spot or something like that. Or if I just touch the area in the wrong way when I'm trying to see if anything looks wrong it hurts too. I went for a physical a month and a half ago and mentioned the itching and she diagnosed a possible yeast infection. I have never had much abnormal discharge I don't think. Does anyone know what this is and if there is any over the counter medicine I could try? I would really rather not go for an exam since the first pelvic I had was at the college health center (which is my only option since I'm away at school) and the nurse was not at all gentle or comforting. By the way, I'm 20 years old and have never been sexually active. Any ideas, please!!!

Re: pain and itching...what could it be?

Hi Amy. Well to me it sounds like the yeast infections that I have had in the past. Very intense itching and pain. The area around my clitoris and lips would get very red also. Another way you can tell if it is a yeast infection is if you have a whitish cottage cheese looking discharge. You will especially notice it on your fingers and under your nails after you itch.

There are very effective treatments for a yeast infection. There are suppositorys that are over the counter that you insert for 7 days. Monistat is a great brand. If you do not want to wait that long there is a prescription that you take orally called Diflucan. I liked this much better as the creams and suppositorys are SO messy in the morning when you wake up.

As the package on Monistat says.. If this is your first time with a yeast infection you SHOULD see a doctor about it. Just incase it is something else. If it is a yeast infection then the next time you should get one you can just go out and get the over the counter medicine as you know exactly what it is.. Hope this helps..

Hi Amy,
You have just brought back a distant memory to me. I had this years ago, and it was exactly as you describe, there's no discharge, no itching really, it's more of a bruised feeling isn't it, and if your jeans or underwear touch your clitoral area it feels like a small shooting pain ...right ??
I had forgotton all about it till I read this. Well, I didn't do anything about it, (was prob too embarrassed to see doc) and after a a few weeks, it just slowly got less and less sensitive till it went away.
I have no idea what it was or what caused it, and I'm sure I was around same age as you too funnily enough, but I wouldn't worry too much, leave it a few weeks and you should find it goes away. Best wishes

Hi Amy,

This has happened to me before, more than likely many women have had this. If you are comfortable with going up to a pharmacist and asking them, they can be most helpful. Remember though, they aren't there to diagnose you though.

What worked best for me was Mycelex Cream [I did try other products that is out there, but they weren't as effective as this one.

Hope this helps you out,

Gina

Re: pain and itching...what could it be?

I have had genital pain for the last three years. As was mentioned, Amy may simply have a yeast infection or it may pass. But I wanted to share this in case it doesn't or if someone else needs help. One place I got information from was http://www.vulvarpainfoundation.org. They suggest a number of possibilities as to what genital pain could be. I use a prescription cream that has given me great relief. Amy, if you haven't already you should see a doctor. If you found the nurse you had to be invasive, request another. Or look into going somewhere else. If you don't get a good answer (and you're still in pain), please don't give up trying to find out what is wrong. Genital pain can really take a toll on your lifestyle in so many ways that it is worth the effort to find relief. I'd be happy to share more information with anyone interested. Good luck.

PS You may also want to take note if you've changed soaps recently. Sometimes a harsh soap can cause genital pain.
[This message has been edited by kdoubleu (edited 11-29-2000).]

Several other things come to mind too. Make sure you wear 100% cotton underwear, eat yogurt with natural cultures in it every day, avoid bubble baths as these can be irritating. Also if you wear jeans that are snug in the crotch these can cause pain, itching and tingling in this area as it restricts the blood flow and is hence similar to sitting on your foot and having it fall asleep. Hope some of these help.

seeing a doctor is important, because not all infections are yeast infection - although it is most common - and the treatment is different(believe me, i can do a Phd on that). i also don't understand why you haven't got a treatment after being diagnosed.
the different creams can surely help, but if it is a yeast infection coming from the vagina, you should take some kind of an internal treatment.
i would also suggent taking a vitamin called "Asidophilus" (i hope i spelled it right) that helps retain the natural "good" bacteria.
good luck

Re: pain and itching...what could it be?

OMG Amy29 - I have the same symptoms - it's been a few months on and off - itching & scratching (makes me mental) - then sore from scratching - then nothing for a couple of weeks - I've had yeast infections before and this isn't a yeast infection - there's no discharge and the itching is in a different place - higher. I've been kinda slow to go to the doc on this - if and when I do I'll let you know what we find out - in the meantime I'm going to try that Mycelex Cream.

Be well.
