Lower Left intermittant discomfort - gyno or gastro?

    Hi everyone,

I just had my second baby almost a year ago. I had him naturally and my periods returned by the second month (I didn't breastfeed). I have a history of "IBS-D" (Not clinically diagnosed, but the very classic symptoms) and these flared after my first baby was born and flared again after my second.

I found my PMS and everything was really bad after my last bub. I never have really had PMS in my life but after him wham - sore breasts, crazy moods, everything. I also started experiencing ovulation pain right away for the first time in my life which I heard is quite common after having a baby.

My PMS and IBS-D symptoms did improve about 7 months ago, but out of nowhere in December I started to get constipated (Never been constipated before). I was like that for several weeks and once I started taking psyllium and slippery elm every morning, I started going to the bathroom again. Admittedly, I sometimes go as much as 5 times a day, even though I only take a little psyllium.

The only problem is, however, that I have retained this intermittent lower left discomfort. It is the strangest thing! Sometimes it feels like a stitch near my hip bone, sometimes its discomfort that wraps around the lower left of my back. Often it feels like there's something in there - like something near my ovary. Sometimes I won't get it for days and days. Then I'll get it every day. Some days for ten minutes. Some days most of the day and it's just nagging. It is NOT tender to touch in that area at all and sex is not an issue (sex is only irritating around ovulation). My periods are awesome and cause me no pain.

I have been to the doctor quite a few times and thankfully this month, finally found a lovely doctor who is helping me out. I had an ultrasound a few months ago that showed absolutely nothing. My ovaries were fine, no fluid, etc etc. I went to a gastro specialist who didn't help me much, he just said I was a classic IBS sufferer and even though the discomfort I mentioned wasn't typical of IBS, he bagged it in that hole.

My problem is, I don't know where to go from here. We want to have another baby. I had no problems conceiving my last two and have had no previous gyno issues, and no history of them either. My periods are very regular. I don't know what path I should be going down - if it's a bowel issue or a gyno one. My doctor seems to think it's not gyno, as I don't really have any symptoms other then the fact that I am experiencing the problem in my pelvic area. He said the only thing is could maybe be is endometriosis, but he doesn't really think it is as I've only been having all this out of the blue and I'm not experiencing any classic symptoms. He says it's far more likely to be a bowel issue given I have had predominantly bowel related problems.

It just doesn't feel like my bowel, you know? Sometimes it does, but the discomfort changes all the time, sometimes it feels near my bladder, other times my ovary, sometimes just my back - its confusing and I'm frustrated. I just want it to go away! I am a highly stressed, busy person and find it is really starting to play on my mind now that it's been 6+ months. If anyone has experienced anything similar and has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

    Sorry for the long post!

Re: Lower Left intermittant discomfort - gyno or gastro?

    Jayden:
I have a similar situation to you. I have had a chronic discomfort on the lower left side of the abdomen. It comes and goes and can't pinpoint the exact location.l Sometimes feels like it could be near the hip bone and sometimes it feels intestinal. I also went to the GYNO and the Gastro dr. Also had a sonogram. I also have IBS. But I also have chronic yeast in the intestines. I suffer also from constipation but my big problem is chronic, chronic gas. Do you have that? Also, just recently I started to get a yeast infection vaginally which I usually don't suffer from and also a little overall pelvic pain. I am going to the gyno next month. Over the past few years I have had the internal sonograms and had a few cysts on the ovaries. If I were you I might get a colonoscopy to make sure it is nothing with the colon and maybe the internal sonogram from the gyno. If all checks ok then I would chalk it up to an IBS symptom. I really don't have answers for you but I can assure you that you are not alone. I have been suffering for years with chronic stomach issues and no real answers. Take care and keep me posted. LaLa
