Horrible and permanent abdominal pain
I am a 20 year old girl. My periods have always been quite heavy and regular (except for the first year).
In october I started noticing that the typical pain I felt usually during ovulation and menstruation lasted longer than usual. I realized it when I found myself in the gym and really had so much pain I could not do anything. The pain carried on. I had it about 2-3 weeks over the 4 weeks of the month. It is a severe pain in only one side (the right one) and I calmed it slightly by applying boiling water pads.
When I had had enough to realize that something was not right I went to the gyn.
It was by February. She told me I had big ovaries and found me a big cyst in the side I had the pain. That was a big relief to have a diagnose. I had a blood test to check for any CA and it was negative. The gynecologyst told me that usually cysts that big do not disappear on their own so I would probably need and operation to have it removed. Anyway she told me to wait for a couple of months in order to see if it grew smaller (even if it was not very likely). Well, then pain kept there and was even worse. I was on a weekend trip and suffered like hell just for the walking around.
I saw no point in delaying the operation two more months, I wanted to end the pain the sooner the better so I made an appointment a month before than expected, by March. I had another transvaginal ultrasound and SURPRISE!!! the cyst was much smaller, about 4 cm, and there was quite a few liquid surrounding it. The gyn said it had probably burst. She said it as good news but I was very shocked and disappointed for I still had the pain and no longer a logical cause for it. Anyway, she ordered blood tests and determined I had anemia, which was atributed to the cyst bursting. She told me to wait another month.
The pain carried on. I went there by April. Transvaginal ultrasound: no cyst at all but a significant amount of free liquid surrounding the ovary. Blood test: anemia was worse. Explanation: abdominal hemorrhaeges last long to heal, so I had not still recovered from the bursting. Prescription: Iron supplement, absolute rest and a visit in a month. The pain should be getting lighter.
The pain carried on. I went there by May. Transvaginal ultrasound: no cyst. More liquid than the month before. Blood test: anemia
Explanation: I probably have heavier than usual menstrual bleedings in the ovaries. Prescription: Oral contraceptives (ethinylestradiol drospirenone, 0.02/3mg) To start taking them the first day of period.
(Parenthesis: In this time lapse, first sexual encounter had place. No gate pain was felt for hymen was broken long ago while riding a bike. BUT bad DEEP pain every time the penis was inside avoided the culmination of pleasure. I haven’t had the opportunity to tell this to my gyn yet but I suspect it might be related to the whole problem I have there, whatever it is.)
Period came. Pill was taken. Pain was worsened. Day after day, worse than before. It is June, and I have the next appointment by August. I am about to end the first box. If by the beginning of the second one I am still like this I’ll advance the visit.
Truth is I am full of this ****. Just after breakfast I take a painkiller (like ibuprofen or dexketoprofen) and during the day I take two more painkillers (more of the kind of paracetamol 1g) but it does not avoid the pain. I am quite desperate. I can do nothing. Only walking to the train station (3 minute walk) is enough to start the pain. I walk like an old lady, very slowly, and it still hurts. I can not carry almost anything in my backpack for it worsens the pain a great deal. This makes grocery shopping quite hard.
Some weeks along the way I have felt some improvement, and taken advantage of it to do some physical activity, like running of swimming. But the “good” periods do not last more than a week and are very rare ( the last one was about two months ago). So I feel my body getting bad from inactivity, my back hurts and legs feel very heavy. Plus I feel bloated, I can feel like and inflammation in the lower right quadrant of my abdomen. I have an urge to urinate quite frequently. I also noticed that the pain might be worse when a little constipated but bowel movements are not painful.
The pain carries on. I browse on the internet looking for people with similar symptoms and it makes me suspect of endometriosis, infections and other conditions because this pain I feel is not normal and I want to put a name to it and put an end to it. :’(
