Exclamation Complex Ovarian Cyst Im scared!!

I'm really looking for answers. last year i was having horrible back pain and abdominal pain so i went to the OBGYN and found out i had two cysts on both my ovaries. the left may contain a hemorrhagic cyst. they gave me birth control and said come back in three months and sent me on my way. Around the three month mark my pain increased, sex was more painful ad uncomfortable i was horrible. when i went back they told me that the cyst on the left ovary is gone but the one on the right is a couple centimeters bigger than before (4.5 x 4.2 cm 4 months later 5.0 x 4.3 cm) CA-125 is normal and the MRI showed the cyst is complex with mild irregularity. Doctor called it an ovarian mass and wants to perform surgery and remove my right ovary! I'm scared I'm young and i love kids and want to have some of my own someday. I don't want to remove my ovary he complications that can come with it being gone scares me. Got a second opinion and he thinks it may be endometriosis calls it a pelvic mass but possibly will have to remove my ovary. i need alternatives and other options

*The first ultrasound showed there wasn't any free fluid in the cul-de-sac the MRI 3 month later showed a trace amount of free fluid is noted in the cul-de-sac.

No reason to be scared. You just need to sort thru this. It is possible that the cyst is located such that just removing it is very difficult. I'm talking about the way it's attached or wraps around the ovary. Losing one ovary isn't the end of the world. You would have the other. However, I'd be asking the "why" about removing the ovary. Is there a real reason or just because it's easier and you don't really need both? And are you seeing just a gyno or a thoracic surgeon? That might be an option as well - someone who does nothing but surgery.

i went to an obgyn and my second opinion was from a robotic surgeon and ovarian cancer specialist.the cyst is attached the back wall of the ovary. im in alot of pain and discomfort and the birthcontrol method got rid of one of the cyst but the other grew. so i think thats why they want to do the surgery.

That I understand. I would still be asking if it's possible to remove just the cyst. And if not, why. Just to get more clarity about the why. Make sense?

Just wanted to say how sorry I am that you're going through this. You've now had two doctors saying they want to remove your ovary, along with the mass so perhaps this is the right way to go. Sometimes it's only when the mass is examined in pathology that they can tell what it is. With some malignant tumours it's important to remove the mass and the ovary together to prevent any danger of a rupture. This could be why they want to take the ovary as well. Some ovarian cancers do not have a raised CA125. I'm praying for a good outcome for you.

I am sorry you are going through this. I cannot blame you for being concerned since removal of any part of the "reproductive" system can impact fertility and even trigger an early menopause. I have connected with many women who have had part(s) removed that did not realize this beforehand and suffered the negative consequences.

I had a much larger complex cyst (9.5cm). My surgeon removed not only the ovary with the cyst but also my other ovary, uterus, and tubes. He even waited for the results of the frozen section (which were benign) and then proceeded to remove the rest of my "reproductive" system. My 20 years of respect for him and trust in "his" oncologist were my downfall. I wish I had understood much more about the overuse of female organ removal (hysterectomy and oophorectomy) and done things very differently to protect my organs and health.

Removal of an ovarian cyst (cystectomy) is a more delicate surgery than removing the ovary along with the cyst especially if the cyst encapsulates the ovary. And time is money to a surgeon. But there are surgeons that have these skills. You just have to seek them out. I recall an article about a woman who had to appeal to her insurance company to cover an out-of-network doctor who would do a cystectomy because she could not find one in-network. The surgeon actually helped her file the appeal.

It is so important that we understand our diagnosis and treatment options and research the pros and cons of each since we are the ones who have to pay the consequences. And unfortunately, getting the best care for long-term health may require some doctor shopping (second, third, fourth opinions).

    I hope this helps!
