: My husband and I were informed that our 3 week old might have CF, due to two abnormal blood tests. So she will need to undergo a sweat test to give us a definitive result. If she does have it, at what age does she start showing symptoms?

: p/s, she has not shown any symptoms at this point.

: Anyone who can provide us any insight is greatly appreciated.

My son was diagnosed with CF within 2 days of birth. He had a blocked bowel. They operated on him when he was 2 days old to remove 1 foot of bowel. Since then he has been on several medications, enzymes, and vitamins. He has just turned 1 and is growing and developing VERY well. So although the condition exists, I don't consider him to be having any signs yet.

Unfortunately, there really isn't an answer to your question. Since it is a genetic disease, there are many factors that play into the severity of the disease. Some individuals show signs early (like my son) while some aren't even diagnosed until they are 19 (a woman I know whose son was only recently diagnosed with it).

The scientists are learning so much about the disease and genetic factors. If your daughter does have CF, please don't be discouraged. There are lots of web sites for information and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation can help you find information and doctors, etc. too.

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to "chat" with you more. The most important thing is to keep your spirits up and take good care of yourself and your daughter. Good luck and God Bless!
