How much does your mom need to lose? Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes and what you need is a lifestyle change. What do you do when you come home from school? Write down what you eat all day.. What do you think is the problem. Almost always anyone who is overweight, whether they be young or old, knows why they are. I know my problem is portion control. I eat only three maybe four times a day, but they are hefty portions. Think about what you want and just go for it... Sorry this is more of a pep-talk then it is a problem solver. You can do it..

When I was 11 yrs old (6th grade)I weighed 170lbs. Please believe me when I tell you I understand how terribly suffocating it is under those extra pounds. Over many years I tried different things, but what finally worked is what landed me in a size 10 @ 140lbs (5'7") by the time I graduated from H.S. Every morning, I rolled myself out of bed (literally)& would do basic toning exercises. You know, leg lifts, sit-ups, free weights. This was a start. When you've increased your stamina, try walking and then aerobic activity. You don't have to do this in front of anyone, if you have a VCR then there are countless tapes out there that will help if you use them. ALSO, I counted calories & fat grams. You should not eat less than 1200 cals/day & only 30% from fat. (I got this from a dietician) Roughly, that means 3 grams of fat for every 100 calories. I have always been embarrassed to eat in public, so the next part was hard. In order to keep track of my cals/fat, every day I wrote down what I ate. This really did help b/c if I was too embarrassed to write something down then I just wouldn't eat that food. NEXT, CHANGE OF ATTITUDE!!! I was so used to not going places b/c I didn't want to be seen that I missed a lot. That made me angry. So, I decided not to be ashamed of who I was anymore (after all I was trying to improve myself) & I forced myself to hold my head up when I walked, no more staring at the ground! Then, I took a chance and went everywhere I could. I stopped telling people I couldn't go somewhere(even when I really wanted to)& made myself say yes before I could think about it. GO AS MANY PLACES AS YOU CAN & YOU'LL BECOME THAT ACTIVE PERSON YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU COULD BE!!! It will help with the weight loss, but more importantly it will help you be just a little happier than you are now.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, You should ask your mother to take you to see your doctor. Ask them specifically to run a thyroid test. You & your mom should read on Hypothyroidism and see if any of the other symptoms apply to you. Next, after your doctor gives you the speech on diet & exercise, ask him/her to refer you to a dietician. A dietician can help you to learn more about how food works for the body...also he/she can give you a formula for how many calories you should eat to lose weight. Wow, I wrote a lot, but it's only b/c I know how overwhelming this kind of problem can be. Please be careful not to let the pain from your weight consume the rest of those things in your life. You have a lot to offer, even if you don't know it yet. I'll check the board every week if you (or anyone else) has a question or just needs to talk to someone. Good Luck!
