: : : : I have a relative in law that was told that she has Barrets and it was terminal, is that true? She is 36 years old with 3 young children is there not anything that we can do for her?
: : : : Please, please give me some information on this...

: : : Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the lining of a chronically irritated esophagus mutates to resemble the lining of the stomach. Cancer of the esophagus eventually develops in around five (5) percent of Barrett's cases, but the disease itself IS NOT TERMINAL.

: : I've just been told that I have Barrett's esophogus at county USC, they gave me Lansoprazole, a generic for previcid. I'm curious what are her symptoms besides reflux. I have three kids to, maybe that has something to do with it. ( just kidding) Hope we can discuss it more sometime.

: There is a somewhat new procedure that can be performed to apply laser to the affected cells in attempt to literally remove that precancerous layer. I also have Barrets Esaphagous and am trying to keep informed on available options. I had surgery two years ago (nissen fundoplication) in which they formed a new LES (lower valve in the esaphagus) by wrapping one third of the stomach around the esaphagus. Coincidently, I had a follow-up scope today and it appears the 'wrap' has loosened. I am not too thrilled with the prospects... either re-enter surgery or take medication the rest of my life (I am only 32). Good luck with your 'common' problem! Try to keep as informed as possible.

My Doctor's nurse just called and told me that I have Barrets esaphagus, but she didn't really give me any information on it. She said it was no big deal, but there were pre-cancerous cells and they would have me re-tested every 2 years to watch it. Can anyone give me any information on this? I have tried to find information on the internet, but couldn't find much. Please help!
