I have a 6 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. She had open heart surgery when she was 4 1/2 months old. I was terrified. I was 25 at the time and had a typical 2 year old toddler. Audrey was extremely sick before her surgery unable even to nurse. She was fed through a tube in her stomach. Today you would never know she was ever sick. She came through her surgery with flying colors. She went in blue and came out pink! Her quality of life greatly improved after her surgery. She now rides a bike with training wheels, is involved in gymnastics, is learning to ski, and is about to start horseback riding. None of this makes surgery any easier, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
