: My niece called me today to tell me that the sonogram she had yesterday indicates her baby girl will be born with Down's Syndrome. Her legs and arms are shorter than normal, her heart as an echogenic defect and a ventricle in her brain has some fluid. She is in her 19th week of pregnancy, is 35 years old, and, needless to say, quite devastated.

: Is it too early to seek out support groups besides family? How do we find a specialistin this area? She has to find another OB because her current OB does not deliver at our local children's hospital. There are so many concerns .... one person she spoke to said there is nothing to do until the baby comes.

: I know no one has any definitive answers, but possibly someone out there can give some suggestions from their own experience.

Jan, I would think that it is NEVER to early to seek out support groups in your area if you want to email me with the city that you live in I will try to put you in touch with some support groups, or if your niece is in another city, it would probably be useful to give that city instead. There are MANY parent groups out there that are related to DS and those parents have so much first hand knowledge, it is heartwarming. I am sure that you would be able to contact families in your area through support groups to find an EXCELLENT specialist.
First and foremost stop worrying...

Hugs,
Melanie
