I had the AFP done with my 1st pregnancy and the results indicated that my baby might have down's syndrome. I had the amnio done and it resulted in a miscarriage of my beautiful, perfectly healthy daughter. If only I had know about the results I would have questioned the doctor more but believed he knew what he was talking about and that the results would be accurate. For my second pregnancy, I specifically told my doctor (a new one) that I did not want the AFP test done. Luckily for me he was supportive and I now have a healthy, happy, vibrant 5 year old son. I still miss my daughter terribly. I encourage anyone who has the test and gets back a positive result to thoroughly discuss the results with your doctor, ask about the values on the test and carefully consider your next step. I would not wish my tragedy upon anyone.
