In Reply to: AFP3 Test, comes back positive for Downs Syndrom. posted by Mary on June 28, 2000 at 22:57:43:

: I am 20 yrs old, happily married, & expecting my first child. However yesterday my docter called to tell me that my " alpha fetal protine 3 " test came back positive for Downs Syndrom....Now they want to have an amnio... However personally I do not feel it is worth the risk.. Does anybody know how accurate "afp3" tests really are ??? And can anybody tell me what to expect if my baby is born with downs....Thanks for any information :)

Mary,
First of all congratulations on your pregnancy. The AFP testing is not at all accurate and as a critical care RN I don't know why they even do it.
I just had my first child in March and she was born with DS. All of our tests came back negative - AFP in particular showed a 1/317 chance! I also know of other people who have had false positives - my sister for one, who was pregnant at the same time as me, had an AFP result that showed a 1/60 chance and her child was perfectly healthy. Pretty ironic HUH? Good luck and best wishes.
