: : We have had Joey,33 years old and down syndrome, severe diabetic since Feb. He is my husbands brother. We got joey just before his mother passed away. Help, help! We really have not gotten much support from family. It has been a real struggle with him, not following rules, etc. Sometimes I expect more out of him than I really should, or should I. I feel he can be trained still to follow rules, like no eating in the middle of the night, or asking for a snack first.
: : We are learning patience with him, it takes him almost 2 hours to eat. It seems like a fight to get to take a shower or even shave.
: : I would love to hear from someone who has an adult DS.

: I am the sister of a 40 yr. old downs boy. I am looking for someone to communicate with about the daily care of him also. He is diabetic and has had a stroke, but is still ambulatory. We count the spits he must do every morning when brushing his teeth! It is up to 27. I am still sitting and waiting for him to come to the table, and then see how long he will be there. I have raised 6 children of my own and this is all new to me. I have had him 5 years, and don't know where the time has gone. please share with me your experiences. C.

Caroline, thank you so much for responding. What I have been working on with Joey is setting a timer. After warning him, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, we take the plate away. He just hates it, but he is learning and will usually finish his plate before the timer goes off. His life has revolved around food, and he needs to realize that there are other things in life. What if you set a timer for him to get to the table? They need to eat, I don't know what else, or make his eat it cold?

Joey will be starting work this Tuesday, at wendy's as a lobby attendant. First time he has had a job. I hope he can handle this job, I have been trying to get him to walk around the block for excercise. WE will see, please keep in touch, my e-mail address is [email protected]
