You have the classic symptoms of a particular type of acid reflux condition called LPR - Laryngopharyngeal reflux. LPR occurs when stomach acid rised pretty high up the esophogous causing erosions in the laryngeal/pharyngeal area. Most people with LPR don't get heartburn, which is the most commonly known symptom of acid reflux. LPR's main symptoms are 1 or more of the following:

-chronic throat clearing
-sensation of lump / something stuck in throat
- Chronic cough
-strange, allergy like symptoms that don't respond to allergy medicines
-asthma-like symptoms that don't respond to asthma medications

LPR is quite treatable. The medications are a class called PPIs - proton pump inhibitors, which decrease the amount of acid in your stomach. Less acid in the stomach = less acid rising up the esophogous into the throat.

People with GERD/Heartburn take 1 dose of a PPI per day. People with LPR must take 2 doses of a PPI per day. You need to take 2 doses of the pill with the greatest amount of medicine in it. For instance, Prilosec comes in 10mg, 20mg, and 40 mg pills. You would need to take 2 40 mg pills per day.

These PPIs are all by prescription:
Prilosec (BRAND)
Prescription Prilosec (GENERIC)

Please note that you should not bother trying Prilosec OTC. Although it is non-prescription and shares the name "Prilosec", it is NOT Prilosec and the name has simply been liscenses out to another company for manufacturing. Not one person on the acid reflux message board has had any positive experience with Prilosec OTC. You must get prescription-grade prilosec, either Brand or Generic if you want to get better.

Also, LPR is a lifelong condition. It always comes back if you stop the medication. Most people experience excellent symptom relief within 1 -30 days of beginning the double dose PPI therapy.

Come visit the acid reflux board and do a little research on LPR on your own. You have classic symptoms.
