High & Low Blood Pressure board

[QUOTE=fxsteve;3491033]I have read many reports about "Beta Blockers" and to be honest a lot I have read have all been not good at all. They have all been quite nasty side effects.

Has anybody out there taken this medicine ?
Has anybody had these side effects ?

Hi Steve and welcome to the boards.

I've taking Atenolol (a beta blocker) since last November until just recently.

My experience from day one was not good, to say the least. I felt I was hit by a truck. Each day I would think that the side effects would dissipate after my body acclimatized a bit, but no. I had terrible dizziness. I felt spaced all the time. My anxiety went through the roof. I had very intense feelings of depression. My heart was pounding what felt like 24 hours a day. I'm sure there's stuff I'm leaving out, but you get the gist. Some people do handle beta blockers well, but I really think the majority don't.

Hi Fxsteve,

BISOPROLOL, BETAXOLOL and the newest pill in America called BYSTOLIC (known as NEBIVOLOL or NEBILET in Europe) are a bit different than most beta blockers prescribed such as METOPROLOL (TOPROL) and ATENOLOL. Keep in mind that the dose is always a factor. With beta blockers, the more precise it targets the Beta1 receptor the less side effects (in theory). The most potent Beta1 beta blockers are: NEBIVOLOL > BISOPROLOL > BETAXOLOL.

Most of my negative side effects occurred when I was taking TOPROL. When taking BISOPROLOL side effects were much less (side effects were mostly headache and tiredness)

In the UK (from what I've read) beta blockers are not recommended as first line therapy anymore, and the most popular are ATENOLOL, BISOPROLOL and CARVEDILOL (which is mainly indicated for heart failure)

P.S. Keep in mind that all HBP meds have side effects. BISOPROLOL is probably much better, more researched and more effective than other classes being thrown our way, such as CALCIUM BLOCKERS, DIURETICS, ALPHA BLOCKERS etc....
Hi guys, this is the elusive partner of fxsteve! My name is Jen and i'd like to extend huge thankyous to all who commented on our medical quandry! I took my first bisoprolol 2.5mg today after reading and inwardly digesting your comments. I have a huge family history of hypertension and atenolol almost killed my nan so you can imagine why i was apprehensive re beta blockers! My whole family have at some point had beta blockers with LOTS of wierd and wonderful side effects. It took my GP a very long time to talk me into any BP meds at all having been monitored regularly for over 2yrs. I tried diets, exercise, de-stressing etc but to no avail (just like the rest of my family!) my average readings are around 170/115 with an average pulse of 105. I tested both when i got home from work and whilst BP was about 150/110 my pulse had dropped to 81! Once again big thanks to all, wish me luck!!:)
