Acne board

With all the news about antibiotics and the dangers of long term use, have any of you stopped using them? If so, how is your acne? I was just wondering how much of an impact antibiotics have if you are also using a topical such as benzaclin and also something such as retin-a micro.

I'm a little wary of them.I just saw a piece on the news about antibiotic use and an increased risk of breast cancer. They're not sure if it's because of lowered immunity in general that leads the women to take antibiotics for prolonged periods, or the chronic use of antibiotics. Like the chicken before the egg dilemma.

When I was a teenager my derm prescibed antibiotics for me, I think I was on one or another basically all through high school! As an adult I have noticed that when I need one now for any health concern, they do not work as well. I normally wind up having 2 or 3 prescibed before one will work. It is really frustrating

Now I wouldn't take them for long periods, and I resent my ex-derm for over prescibing them back then.

They honestly never really helped with the acne anyway!
Thanks for the replies ya'll. My son has been on Minocycline for about 5 months now, along with retin-a micro (for about3 months) and benzaclin and a BP wash in the morning (for the entire 5 months also). I worry about him taking the antibiotic, but his acne was pretty severe to begin with. I just don't know how bad it would get it he left it off. The prescription is only for 6 months, so he'd have to see the derm about another one or something different in another month anyway. I really wish he could leave that off, but I'm sure he doesn't want to go back and have that horrible acne again!

How is his acne now? If he's clear, I'd say see what the doctor says and what your son wishes to do.

Antibiotics are bad, but your son's self-esteem is priceless unless he's having side effects IMHO.

I understand your concerns about antibiotics. I am 27 and have had stubborn acne for years. I went on minocycline last year and for the first time, my face was clear. I was worried about the long time use of antibiotics and went off my mino after 6 months. Big mistake! Now I am trying to see if the mino will work again but after a few weeks...my face is not clearing up.

Taking antibiotics long term for acne is a risk. However, for me, it proved to very worthwhile.
