Smoking Cessation board

Bupropion SR (Wellbutrin SR), an antidepressant (mood elevator), is used to treat depression. Bupropion SR(Zyban) is used to help people stop smoking.
They are the same drug. I've never quite figured out why the same drug has two different names. The generic version (bupropion) is available mfg. by Watson Labs and Eon Labs. Otherwise, the branded versions, Wellbutrin and Zyban are mfg. by Glaxo Smithkline.

As to the costs of these drugs, a check of one online vendor indicates that Zyban 150 mg 12-hr tablets (this is the dosage used for smoking cessation) are $115 for 60 and Wellbutrin tabs of the same dosage are also the same price. However Wellbutrin (the product prescribed for depression) is also available in other dosages, as is the generic version Bupropion HCI. The 150 mg dosage of bupropion is $72 for 60 tabs.

Some medical insurance policies do not cover the costs of smoking cessation. For these insurers, Rx for the drug to be used for smoking cessation wouldn't be covered while its use as an antidepressant would be. Hence the two different names.
