Discussions that mention bupropion

Bipolar Disorder board

Strawberry ~ I believe that Zyban and Wellbutrin are the same drug......I recall reading something on the internet about that. I will research it some more and get back to you but just wanted you to not worry too much. And as far as your concern about the antidepressants that are not good to be used without a mood stabilizer, Wellbutrin is one of the ones I believe that is not a SSRI which is safer to use in people who may be Bipolar. I just wanted to alleviate that worry of yours as well.

Update: Found this info which should ease your mind......

GENERIC NAME: bupropion
BRAND NAME: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, Zyban
According to my nursing drug book, the generic name for Wellbutrin is bupropion. The three tradenames are Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, and Zyban. So yes, Wellbutrin and Zyban are the same drug.

Because of the stigma attached to antidepressants, I think the pharmaceutical company, after finding out Wellbutrin works well for smoking cessation, was able to get FDA to approve the med as Zyban so they could market it for a different use and avoid the stigma. The same thing has happened with Prozac. Prozac is also marketed under the tradename Sarafem and Sarafem is indicated for PMS, not depression. Those wily pharmaceutical companies, what will they think of next?

My guess is that you are getting Zyban either because it may be cheaper than Wellbutrin or because it may be easier to get where you are.

Hope some of this helped.
