I would suggest maybe seeing a second orthopedic surgeon, a different one from the one that did the surgery. There may have been some issues from the surgery that still need to be addressed. It would also be a good idea to get a new set of x-rays and maybe an MRI/Arthogram.

In terms of meds, he could try one of the newer COX-2 inhibitors such as Vioxx, Bextra, or Celebrex. I have been on Bextra since tearing my ACL in late august and it has made a huge difference. You can also supplement it with tylenol if needed, this combination really works well for me.
