Pain Management board

I fell off the top of a semi-truck loaded 2 high with pallets of lumber (about a 2 story fall) when I was 22 yrs old. When I fell I landed on my hips first and then my back and was in a body cast for a year and a body brace for 1 1/2 years. Since then (am in my 50's now) I've suffered with lower back and hip pain that often radiates down into my legs and up into my neck. Doctors have given me a variety of meds but mostly ibiphrofen products along with tylenol/codene 3 for the really bad times. The codene 3's just doesn't even begin to cut it. I can pop 2 and 3 of those at a time only to have the pain subside for a little while but have it replaced with a very upset stomach that sometimes even includes vomiting.

At the moment I'm on Celebrex (after having taken Vioxx for about 2 or 3 years) along with the codene 3's and am getting desperate for some REAL RELIEF for those bad days. Almost every doctor I've gone to so far has been reluctant to prescribe anything "for fear you will become addicted to it". I've tried explaining that I'm not the type to take pills unless I really need them and even then only as a last resort but that doesn't seem to phase the doctors in the least. Number one question is, how do I get through to doctors and convince them that this is not all in my head and that "taking two aspirin and calling the doctor in the morning won't help". Am receiving state subsidized medical coverage (includes prescription drugs) so changing doctors on a regular basis to find one that understands pain is not an option.

Along with the REALLY BAD DAYS that include absolutely unbearable pain is a depression that has occasionally left me wondering if "LIFE" is really all it's cracked up to be and if I truly want any more of it. Believe me, I'm NOT suicidal by any means but there are days when the pain level is more than I can deal with.

I've been investigating a variety of medication possibilities because at some point my doctor and I are going to have a serious conversation about all this. So any advice or suggestions that anyone can offer will be most appreciated. Number two question is what could possibly help relieve some of this pain on the really bad days and not cause such a severe upset stomach?

Am not sure if this part is allowed by the moderators but I did get a pain pill from a friend of a friend one time that helped. It was white, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick, and looked like a capsule but was a one peice pill. Can't find out what it was but it sure knocked the pain out without leaving me sick to my stomach or drowsy. If anyone can think of what it might have been please feel free to say so, if it is allowed.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice will be most appreciated and might just bring me some much looked for relief. Many thanks in advance.
