Cancer: Prostate board

Hello all,

I am now 3 days shy of being 5 weeks post-op and thought I'd give an update on how things are progressing. I have several other posts that tell of my experiences both before and immediately after the surgery, as well as preparations I made at home in advance, and other tips on getting through this with a minimum of inconvenience. I've also talked about some surprises that cropped up, and how I dealt with them. So if you have some time, look for my other postings...they may be of some help to you if you are looking down the barrel of radical prostatectomy!

So all in all, this hasn't been a horrible experience so far. My incision is healing up very well, and there is no pain there whatsoever. I have begun going back to the gym. I'm working out with relatively light weights, but I'm feeling OK and again...no pain at all. I've even started doing some abdominal exercises to "test the waters", and again...no pain. When I sit on a hard surface, I do have a slight bit of pressure, or a dull ache near the area between my scrotum and anus, and that becomes less each day.

Continence is coming along. I really didn't have too much problem with it. I had a LOT more leakage while the catheter was in place than I did after it was removed. For a few days I used maybe 2 or 3 male pads each day, and that also diminshed rapidly. I am usually very dry during the night, and while sitting or laying down. Standing and walking around a lot causes some leakage, but that is decreasing too. Once or twice I had a fair amount of leakage over night, but only a couple times. I do leak a bit when stooping or bending, and during some exercises at the gym. I've pretty much been able to hold a decent amount of urine in my bladder, and my stream is very good. I can start and stop the stream numerous times while urinating, and that is a good way to exercise the sphincter as well as to get the feel of exercising it. One thing I noticed is that the "feeling" that I have to urinate is different than it was before. At first I didn't recognize it, but now I do, and am getting more attuned to having the urge!

I am now using a woman's "ultra thin maxi pad" which I insert into the fly opening of my briefs. I just tuck it in between the 2 layers of fabric and use the sticky stuff on the pad to keep it there. I found the pad directly touching my penis to be very uncomfortable, and that is why I came up with this plan. Now my penis is touching the soft cotton. If I leak, it just goes through one layer of cloth and into the pad. I use one pad per day now, and it is never soaking wet at the end of the day.

Potency is another issue. There is sensation there, but no erection to speak of. My doctor gave me samples of Cialis, and a Rx for 6 pills cost $87! Luckly I can get 36 pills by my mail-order pharmacy plan for $40, so if you have a mail order plan, check it out. They MAY just cover this stuff. The big question....Does it work? The answer....sort of! I was able to achieve at least some size increase, but far from a rigid erection. Orgasm is possible too, but of course there is no ejaculate. It's a strange sensation indeed, but I guess it's better than nothing. From what I've heard and read, the amount of erection I'm able to achieve is pretty good for this time frame. I keep trying!

My pathology report, as stated in a previous post, was not as good as I would have liked. There was some involvement with "striated skeletel muscle" and so I'm looking at radiation therapy in my future. I contacted the radiation oncologist whom my doctor recommended, and have an appointment for 3/23. That's almost 3 weeks from now....YIKES...these guys are as hard to see as an orthopedic guy!

I'm self employeed in the Handyman business. I haven't worked since around the middle of December due to holidays, a death in the family, and then my protracted cold, which not only delayed my surgery by 3 weeks but also turned me into a hermit...not wanting to pick up another germ. I'm planing on starting some small jobs next week to see how it goes. I think it will be fine, I just am unsure of how much weight I can lift. Some of my tool boxes are pretty heavy! I guess for a while I'll be making a lot of trips back and forth to the truck!

That's it for now. I'll keep you posted. Until then...keep the faith.
