Cancer: Prostate board

A friend sent me this site due to my having concerns about my "quality of life" recovery after Prostate Cancer Surgery. My complete prostatectomy was on April 26, 2007 so I'm 4+ months post-. I'm 62 years old and in overall good health. I have been a runner for many years. I have had PSA's since 1999 and all were elevated but biopsies always came back negative. My PSA was as high as 8 and I still had good biopsies. In late 2006 I had a PSA of
12+ and my urologist suggested a "saturation biopsy" which detected the cancer. I had been researching various treatments since 2000 with the expectation that I would, someday, need to take action. I thought I would go with "seeds" but, after much consulatation with my doctor, and a panel of other doctors set up by my hospital to discuss treatments, I selected surgical removal. I was having sex approx twice/week prior to surgery. I HATED the catheter which remained for two weeks. I noted that my penis had become much smaller at the time of catheter removal. I joked with my uro that my penis "was hiding in my pubic hair". He explained (in lay terms)that the prostate had helped to "push the tubing forward" and, without it, my penis was now shorter. I did not like this either. I have regained some length but not what I had before. I had some incontinence issues for the first couple of weeks after catheter removal but, based on suggestions from my uro, I had practiced kegel exercises for a long time prior to surgery and, once I could feel the kegel responding again, I did more. I used pads for awhile as "insurance" but after realizing I had no leakage, I stopped. I must say that I am pleased with the work done by my uro...I never needed any pain medication after surgery. My surgery was on Monday and I went home Wednesday after lunch. After I received "a clean bill of health" (no trace of cancer) I breathed a sigh of relief. I have had orgasms but no erections. The orgasms are mild and most have been after using cialis...however I have had one or two with no medication. I have tried a vacuum pump but the erection does not sustain. After reading many of the stories here I may be in too much of a hurry but sex has been very important in my life for many years and I cannot think of living without it. During the time I was diagnosed with cancer I also found that I needed a hip relacement. Due to my good health that surgery was performed just 8 weeks after prostate surgery. I again did not need pain medication after surgery which was on a Wednesday and I returned home on Saturday. Now, although I've been advised not to run again, I walk up to five miles/day. I am awaiting a call from my uro for another follow-up visit at which time I will discuss "advancing" my therapy to return my sex life (injections??? different medications from- or stronger doses of- Viagra and Cialis???). Overall I feel good but I DO want my sex life back. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to reading more from this group.
