Allergies board

Is there a big difference between the two. I usually use Claritin D and it does work for me. I had asked my doctor for a sample of the Singular and wondering if there is any reason for me to switch?
I do have asthma also, does this work better for asthma patients then Claritin would for any reason?? I am currently taking Advair, Astelin spray, Nasonex spray, saline.

Singulair and Claritin are two very different meds that don't do the same thing, but both can benefit people with asthma. Claritin is an antihistamine that helps stop the release of histamines that cause an allergic reaction. You can take Claritin any time and it kicks in pretty quickly to stop the allergic reaction.

Singulair is a leukotriene inhibitor that stops the release of a chemical that causes inflammation as a result of an allergic reaction or other inflammatory disease like asthma. For Singulair to be effective you must take it every day - and many people take an antihistamine like Claritin in addition to Singulair.

You probably shouldn't look at it as an either/or - Singulair, in addition to Claritin, may help control your allergies and asthma but it's important to understand how they're different.
