Discussions that mention clonazepam

High & Low Blood Pressure board

I'm a 44-year old male with Anxiety (Panic) Disorder. When I had my first panic attack several months ago, I went to the ER with rapid heartbeat and pretty high BP (I think around 190/120). My heart is fine, and my BP came back down after the panic attack was over, but my doctor gave me some .25 mg Xanax for the anxiety and started me on Metoprolol 50 mg twice daily and Lotrel 5/10 mg once daily for moderate high BP (about 140/90). My BP had been borderline high since I was a teenager.

I'm on Clonazepam now for the anxiety, and that is pretty much under control (although still there), but my BP hasn't really gotten that much lower. My doctor increased the Lotrel to 5/20 mg, which helped a little at first. I'm 5'-11" 175 lbs, and I run about 20 miles a week and lift weights about 5 days a week. My resting heart rate is almost always less than 60 (as low as 40). I gave up all stimulants (coffee, chocolate, candy) and high-sodium foods. I eat mostly salads and cereals and fruits and vegetables. I take the medication religiously, but still it never really gets much lower.

It's a roll of the dice whenever I take my blood pressure at home. It will range from 120/65 to 150/90 (with no apparent rhyme or reason). It's often high first thing in the morning. Is this common? But if I wait a few minutes and take it again, it is usually lower. I'm baffled, and I'm starting to get discouraged. Does anyone else have a similar situation? I don't know what else I could be doing. I'm not sure if it's the anxiety driving my BP upward somehow (my thyroid was fine back in January).

Any thoughts or ideas?
