Shelley,

Go for the "diagnosis by cure method." Buy an anti dandruff shampoo like Selsun Blue. Apply it and rub in. Let sit for 1/2 hour and scrub/shower (bath brush helpful.) The Zinc Pyrithione shampoos work almost as well. Do this daily for a week.Don't try the common antifungals like clotrimazole or tinactin...they just don't work for t. versicolor.

Tinea versicolor which is by far the more common condition will go away pretty quickly...like a week? (get it ALL though.)

If it's gone it was tinea. If not, see your doctor.
Another clue for tinea is the most common infection site is mid-chest, upper inner arms and up over the shoulders onto the upper back. It unfortunately recurs periodically in susceptible people. My partner gets it annually but I've NEVER caught it.
