Hi Joyce,

The ER doc gave me Lortab and Naproxsyn. They helped with the pain but didn't seem to last very long. I stopped taking them and got my Combunox refilled. This is what my GP prescribes and my neuro is just letting him write the RX since he (the neuro) tried to switch me twice and both times the meds made me sick with nausea and vomiting. The Combunox works so much better for pain relief and in doing some research I saw why. Lortab or Vicodin peaks at 1 to 2 hours then goes downhill to giving little to no relief after 6 hours. Combunox peaks at 1 to 2 hours but gives the same level of relief after 6 hours. It pretty much lasts 8 hours but I only take one or two at the most per day only when the pain is severe or I have to do a lot of walking. I used to wait until the pain was unbearable but I know better now not to wait that long.

I don't like the tolerance issues or the fact that taking opiates will cause rebound pain so I try to look for alternatives to pain pills for relief. I know many people have concerns with GPs taking the ball but it seems as if my neuro is more interested in doing the testing and conservative/conventional treatments while my GP is interested in discussing other ways to treat the pn. Like Harry, my GP is interested in nutritional factors but my neuro is not. I just feel better (mentally and physically) with my GP handling the majority of my treatment.
