Restless Leg Syndrome board

I was diagnosed with Parkinson's in May 2000. I started on Mirapex immediately and took it for 7 years. As the dose increased, finally to 1mg three times a day, I began to have side effects such as weight gain, swollen legs and feet and sleeplessness.

In addition, I would play games on the computer all night and most of the day with people all over the world. I became very good at poker, canasta, pool, etc.

Over the years, as this compulsive behavior continued, I became so sleep deprived that depression became another problem.

Finally, in February 2007, my Neurologist took me off Amantadin and Mirapex and increased my Sinemet. After 24 hours, the compulsive behavior stopped and has not returned! Later, Comtan was added (5 times a day).

Gradually, my symptoms got worse. I began using a cane, rolling walker and
at times a wheelchair. In late August, my primary care doctor tested my vitamen D level (see my post titled PD & vitamin D). I took vit. D twice a week and Fosamax with Vit. D once a week for 12 weeks. I have not used even a cane since the second week. This improvement was truly remarkable!

I had a repeat blood test in December and the vitamin D twice a week was stopped and just the Fosamax + D was continued. My stiffness and muscle cramps starting getting worse. Just 2 weeks ago, my doctor increased the vit. D to once every other week.

This has been a trial and error process all the way. Every patient with Parkinson's needs to be his or her own advocate when it comes to treatment. I am very fortunate to have a very caring husband who has supported me from the very beginning.
