High & Low Blood Pressure board

Beth's questions:

1.) I have a DR's scale- great investment. It really helped when we were stationed in Panama & it seemed like I couldn't find any of my usually low calorie foods. Even though my eating got out of control, I still weighed myself everyday. Finally I woke up & figured out how I could weather the situation.

2.) My bread has 95 mg sodium. My Dr. said not to limit my sodium any more since I am on a diuretic. I cook without salt & measure out my tsp of salt & put it in a small salt shaker to sprinkle on food. I also need the iodine in salt because I don't eat fish although the vegetables may have enough iodine if they are flown in from coastal areas,

4.) The bacon bits are artificial. They are 30 cal for 3 tsp, with 1.5 gm fat. Lots of flavor for 10 cal for 1 tsp.

5.) Sure I share my recipes. The pumpkin custard is from the Libby's can. Just cut the sugar in half & use the skim milk evap. milk. The custard freezes well.

6.) The can & or freeze jars are glass jars-can't think of the brand name, but Walmart has them.

7.) The margarine has 380mg of sodium for 4 tbs or 1 tsp has 31mg sodium. I put my stick of margarine in a glass canning jar (pint size) with a metal measuring spoon (tsp) so that I'm not tempted to eat too much. Fat really does a number for those of us with acid reflux.

8.) Protein intake formula. Take your base weight (otherwise known as the weight in which you are not considered fat). For a lot of people, it is the weight they were in high school.

So for me that is 120 lbs. Then divide 120 by 2.2 to find the number of Kg. For me that is 5. The protein requirement is 0.8gm per Kg of body weight which is 43.6gm of protein.

I don't want to eat too much protein because of potential problem with my kidneys regarding gout etc. I could go a little higher for weight loss purposes but 44 gm will give me enough so why take the risk.
My main source of reliable nutrition info is "Nutrition" by Frances Sizer & Eleanor Whitney (00). This is a classic college text book.

8.) Taking b/p's at other times. I have cuff anxiety which is easily evoked so I usually limit my b/p taking to the am. I have in the past taken my b/p at all different times of the days etc. I even one time took it while eating spagetti to see if that helped :). My arms got so sore that at one Dr's appointment, I had to refuse having my b/p taken. In addition I have the upper arm damage from Cozaar plus my right arm was damaged from a needle which broke off while getting a shot as a 2 yr old.

Hope I have all your questions answered. I'm starting my c-pap again after quitting it about 2 yrs ago because my husband didn't like the noise. I think actually he doesn't like the clinical look of it. I will probably just use it when I take my nap.

If I get more relaxed & my cuff anxiety doesn't spring up, I may do that experiment we were talking about. I was going to try using it while working in the kitchen just to see how much it lowered my b/p. You are so lucky that you don't have cuff anxiety.

[QUOTE=famnd;3449749]Beth's questions:...

Thanks so much, famnd!!!

1. I might look into getting a new scale...I was up 2 pounds today (it must have been the"lite" soy sauce that didn't look very "lite" to me). Apparently I have a water retention issue and an accurate scale may help some.

2. Thanks for the clarification on the sodium...you can nix my question on the spaghetti, etc...and yes, from what I understand we don't have to be so concerned about the iodine requirements given foods coming in from outside the iodine belt (or whatever they're calling it these days).

4.) May forego the bacon bits...bacon is something I enjoy, but maybe a little too much.

5. Will have to pick up a can of libbys...usually I just buy pumpkins and cook them down. Pumpkins are a favorite food!

6.) I think I can just use my canning jars...but I have lots of other containers, too.

7.) I need to put a measuring spoon in my margarine container...fats can be a problem for me (although with the DASH diet it's not difficult to limit these...I probably don't get enough).

8.) Thanks for the protein formula!!! I know I used to eat too much protein (probably still do because I don't weight it).

[QUOTE]...In addition I have the upper arm damage from Cozaar plus my right arm was damaged from a needle which broke off while getting a shot as a 2 yr old.... It's a wonder that you don't have more than just cuff anxiety!!!

Thanks so much for answering all of my questions...I really appreciate it!

Am glad to hear you are going to start c-papping again. I don't know what kind of machine you have, but when I replaced my humidifier last, they sent an improved version...the expired air comes out a vent near the humidifier and not by the face so it is considerably quieter...especially if your little machine is 6 feet from the bed. That cpap is going to help with your blood pressure, and probably your anxiety issues, I'm sure. My little machine looks like a small tape recorder...if your husband doesn't like the look of it, you could always cover it with a decorator pillow case, :D. I almost always use mine when I nap...it soothes me.

What experiment was that? While I may not have cuff anxiety, I may have developed anger issues...we haven't addressed those on the board but I've been doing some reading on the diastolic and anger may impact that. Hmmm....another thread, another post.
