Discussions that mention demerol

I had neck trouble beginning in 2003. The Neurosurgeon (NS) I saw referred me to a pain management doctor and I had a set of 3 epidural injections (1 every 2 weeks). They worked wonderfully and alleviated my pain 99% untili fall of 2005. I underwent another series of 3 epidural injections but this time they did not work as well. The MRI I had in early 2006 showed some changes and I saw a highly recommended orthopedic spine surgeon who recommended a C5-C6-C7 Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) - which I had done on 5/18/06. He said the changes that were showing on the MRI (spurring) was the reason the injections were no longer working. Had the injections continued to work I would have continued doing them twice a year (a series of 3 twice a year).

The Epidural injections are relatively easy and quick. I would arrive at the center, register, they take me back and start an IV and I would sit in a room with others waiting for their treatment. When called I was placed laying down on a table and given versed and phentanyl (versed makes you forget the procedure and the phentanyl or demerol is for any pain). It's called conscious sedation. Then I'd sit in a recliner for a few minutes, drink some juice and went home and just took it easy for the rest of the day.

Personally I believe in the least invasive approach first which is why I chose to begin treatment with the injections.
