Back Problems board

I went and got a second opinion from a doctor. The first dr.said I needed a bone fusion at L4 L5 for the spondoloythesis in my back. I also have a tingling feeling in my left foot. The second Dr. I went to was a DO. He looked at my MRI's and said I didn't need surgery. He took a couple of x-rays and showed me the pars fracture I had. But he said if I really strenghted my abs and glutes that it would hold it in place and wouldn't cause it to move and cause the pain. He said that a ton of football players have this injury and not need surgrey. He gave a prescription of Diclofenac Sodium 75 mg for the tingling. Said it will cause the swelling to go down in my back. So the problem is I'm really confused and stressed out on what to do. Has anybody strengthened the abs like that to avoid surgery. Any information is greatly appreciated.

:) With respect to your situation, and the fact you've had a second opinion that's contray to your first Dr.'s opinion a third may not hurt.I was diagnosed with 3rd degree spondoloythesis in the lower lumber as well the disk above the sacrum (tail bone) was out almost 75% of the way and a general practitioner wanted to send me home on muscle relaxers.I was 20 years old at the time and could no longer feel my legs(started with tinglings for years b4 that) I had the spinal fusion and have been walking for still another 20 years now and i gave birth to 2 children.I won't lie to you there are many days i'm uncomfortable with pain but i'm not in a wheelchair where i could have been 20 years ago had i not. With respect to the strengthing the abs I was in top physical condition b4 my surgery i would be more cautious of straining the vertabrae to slip out of place creating greater pain or paralyzation. Never play with your spine!!!All the best Keep in touch maybe.
