Discussions that mention dopamine

Addiction & Recovery board

Hi Joan,

I have a psychiatrist friend who told me lots of us opiate fiends are trying to self medicate for something...depression, ADD, OCD, bipolar etc. Being high I guess is the 'cures what ails you'. At any rate, it is not uncommon at all for antidepressants to be used. I think Wellbutrin is widely used for addictions of all sorts. Supports the dopamine pathway while our brains get used to the idea of having to make neurotransmittors again. I think for lots of people it really works and lifts the depression faster. Not sure about the energy levels or sleeping, but perhaps it is all connected. I hope it works...it will be good to talk to a dr. about what is going on with you regardless of the outcome.

I'll be interested in how it goes, so post again when you get the chance.
