Discussions that mention duragesic

Pain Management board

HI, well i went to see my primary doctor today,
because of getting severe headaches from taking
the "ultram" for my chronic nerve pain.
So she gave me to try the "duragesic patch"
she started me out on the lowest dosage,
25mg. since being that i have a hard time
swallowing pills we decided that maybe the
patch would benefit me better.
Is anyone else taking the duragesic patch?
And have you gotton good pain relief from it??
I am just so sick and tired of chronic pain whether
it be from my 24/7 nerve damage pain or from
the headaches that i have been getting that i will
try just about anything to just relief some of the pain.
I know that i didnt want to go on any narcotics but
my primary doctor told me that that's practically all there
is out there, that "ultram" is about the highest that you can
go for chronic pain (non-narcotic).
Well she only gave me 8 patches to try, just to see
if it helps with the pain and she said that if the 25mg doesn't
help then she would up the dosage, which i pray that doesn't
happen.
she told me that i have to come in to see her everytime that
i would need more patches, that being it's a narcotic that
she just cant write out a few months prescription for me.
which i can understand being that it's a narcotic.
so if anyone has any information about this patch
i would really appreciate it! :)
Thanks! Kim :p

Hello Kim,

I have been using the patch for some time now after my doctor sent me to a pain specialist and i have had good relief of my nerve and muscle pain. I previously had been taking vicodin in large amounts and my orthopedic surgeon was worried about liver toxicity. no danger of that with the duragesic. I had major back surgery 20 months ago and i still have a lot of pain but the duragesic works wonders in alleviating it with the added benefit ( and i really like this) of only replacing it every 72 hrs instead of popping pills and trying to remember when to take etc. The patch is rarely addicting if at all if used as intended for serious pain. I hope this was useful to you and if i left something out please feel free to ask me a question and i will try to help.

Best Wishes, Larry

I SAW YOUR POST AND FENTANYL(THE PATCH) IS 200 TIMES STRONGER THAN MORPHINE I AM ON IT AND WOULD BE VERY HARD FOR ME TO RECOMEND IT TO SOMEONE UNLESS IT THERE FINAL OPTION DON`T TAKE IT BECAUSE YOU JUST DON`T FEEL LIKE TAKING PILLS BELIEVE ME THERES NO GOING BACK ONCE IT STOPS WORKING FOR YOU UNLESS YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE TO GO UP AND UP
Hello Kim32,

I believe I replied to your post about the Ultram giving you headaches. They weren't for me either. I can understand you not wanting to be on narcotic medication, but with Chronic Pain sometimes we have no choice. I too am on the Duragesic Patch 75mg. I have been on it for about 6 months, it works really well for my pain. I hope it works well for yours as well. The nice thing about the Patch is that there are fewer side effects, and it isn't harsh on the liver as it contains no acetaminiophen (sp). This may not be something that you want to hear, but I must tell you that the first 2 patches I put on I got headaches from the patch, but they went away as soon as my body adjusted to them. So be patient and give them a chance. You may not notice effects right away as it takes about a day to get into your system. It has really given me back somewhat of a life.. Before Duragesic I laid in bed curled up with a heatng pad daily, was in constant pain, and couldn't accomplish anything. Now that I have been on Duragesic I can do so many things that I could not do before..I am grateful that my Dr put me on them. I hope you get as much relief as I have from them. If you find that they work well for your pain, and you are going to be on them for any length of time and you have trouble keeping them on..The company makes a coverlette for them. They are called Bioclusive Tape, you can obtain them free of charge from the company that makes Duragesic, just call the number on the back of your box they will ask you a few questions and then they will send them to you in about a week. There was a post not long ago that tells all about obtaining the Bioclusives. I'll see if I can find it and move it to the top of the threads. Hope I answered any and all of your questions and that I gave you some helpful information too.

Take Care

I am very opiate tolarent and the 100mcg/h patch works wonders for me. And that Micro Grams per hour, not mg as one person had it. It is also highly additive as Justwandering was pointing out. Any narcotic is additive. And Fentanyl is the end of the line in potent narcotics. Try to stay on the lowest amount you can for as long as you can. The 100mcg/h patch took the place of the 200mg of morphine I was taking before and I also get 1200mcg Actiq (Fentanyl citrate). One of the main advantages to this drug-Duragesic-is that it goes straight to your blood stream and does not have to be metabolized by your liver(which is a very good thing). Good luck to all of you and may GOD help you through the hard times.
