Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) board

Hi, I have both PTSD and atypical bipolar depression- however, the PTSD is currently the more prominent diagnosis.

The PTSD is chronic from childhood and in part due to more recent medical trauma, where doctors kept messing up on my medications. For example, one did not check my lithium levels and I ended up in the ICU because of it. It's a long story, but after about 23 medicines over a two year period, the last doctor said I had atypical bipolar, and prescribed an MAO for that. Previously I was on Zoloft and lithium for about 15 years with no hospitalization.

I often read Cymbalta, Lexapro, Zoloft and maybe Effexor as common treatments for PTSD. These are all SSRIs. I had trouble starting up on most of them, but SSRIs seem to be the most commonly prescribed. Has anyone had success with the MAOs, namely Emsam, the patch? People have also warned me that PTSD is best treated with therapy. True? Thanks.
