I didn't realize you hadn't seem a rheumatologist yet. A DMARD is a disease modifying drug that will help slow down the damage from the RA. It is overwhelming at first. Doctors tend to treat aggressively and some of the new TNF inhibitors (enbrel and humira, etc) stop the damage from occurring to begin with. Be sure to make sure you understand the ins and outs of your insurance and prescription coverage. You don't want to begin a treatment only to discover that it's not covered like you thought.

I'm taking a drug I refused for 18 months and it has been a miracle for me. It's an older drug, in pill form and it's generic. Most importantly, it's working. I was having an increase in joint pain and was just miserable and after a week, I called for help and took the burst/taper of prednisone. Prednisone will make you not be sleepy and cause you to want to just graze and inhale anything and everything. I've been done a couple of days and am feeling pretty good again. Just take lots of deep breaths and read as much as you can about the disease and treatments. That way you will be informed when it comes time to make a choice about which drug to try.
