Your symptoms sound a bit like RA to me, do you have any other symptoms? You mentioned thyroid, is it autoimmune (Hashimoto's) hypothyroid? Having one autoimmune disorder can predisposed you to getting another.

Although . . . there are many other conditions that can cause pain in hand/fingers. You said you're a secretary, muscle and tendon problems like cubital or carpal tunnel syndromes can cause stiffness, pain and tingling.

Treatments for RA have advanced greatly in the past 20 years and deformity is no longer the norm. First line of defense is the Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs); Motrin, Aleve, Celebrex etc. In severe cases an oral corticosteroid may be used to calm down the disease long enough to give the other medications a chance to work. An injection of steroids may also be given directly into a severely diseased joint.

Second line of defense is the Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) these include Methotrexate (MTX), Minocin, Arava, Plaquenil and Imuran. They may be used together or alone.

If that fails, the next line is the new Biologics; Enbrel, Humira, Remicade, Orencia and Rituxan. These are also DMARDs and are used alone or with Methotrexate.

I know it's a long wait till August. Ack! But remember it may not be rheumatoid at all! Good luck!!
