Discussions that mention estradiol

Acne board

Each of these birth control pills are different, they do not contain the same active hormones. Diane 35 is manufactured by Schering and not available stateside, and Yasmin is manufactured by Schering in Europe, but Berlex Laboratories in the U.S. Diane 35 is actually touted on it's website as being an anti acne pill that contains hormones of cyproterane acetate and ethinyl estradiol. They are finding cases of Diane 35 causing serious life threatening blood clots and I highly doubt that the FDA will approve it's use in the U.S.

Yasmin is the newest of the birth control pills and is said to be different that it contains a totally different hormone than what has been commercially used in the 40 or so different birth control formulations out on the market currently. It contains the hormone ethinyl estradiol and the new hormone drospirenone. Yasmin is touted as being the pill that keeps away water retention and weight gain, but nothing much is said on it's website about actual anti acne properties. What is said about it is that it promotes milder periods, reduced risk of ovarian cysts, reduced risk of ectopic pregnancy,(which is a major reason why I'm on it) and reduced risk of breast lumps, pelvic inflammatory disease, and types of cancer.

Ortho Tricyclen is made by Ortho McNeil and was the very first pill billed as an acne prevention birth control pill. It contains norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol. A major difference between these pills is that Ortho Tricyclen is a TRI PHASIC pill which means that the hormones are delivered at different levels each week of the pack. Diane 35 and Yasmin are called MONOPHASIC pills because the same amount of hormones are administered in every pill for 3 weeks straight, then 7 pills are non active. All pills seem to have an anti angrogen effect (angrogen is a form of testosterone that helps bring out acne).

Keep in mind that Ortho Tricylen came out first, Diane 35 came out later, and then Yasmin came out fairly recently so improvements were made on the birth control pill every year a new brand was introduced to the public. From what I've seen so far, most women have praised Yasmin for it's non weight gain properties and for clearing up acne more than comments I've seen about Diane 35 or Ortho, but each individual is different and I guess it's worth trying each formulation to see what works best for that particular individual.
