Schizophrenia board

:) Hi! I am a 29 year old male diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. I feel the need to share some of my thoughts regarding my diagnosis. First off, I am probably not the only one who wonders if they were diagnosed correctly. I was diagnosed 6 years ago at a stress care unit in our local hospital. I talked to 3 doctors for about 10 minutes a piece, I was having paranoid delusions yes, but there were other factors. One of those factors was the fact that I had recently stopped using marijuana and amphetamines. There is a diagnosis called "drug induced psychosis", and "brief psychotic disorder" which also involve paranoid delusions but they insisted that I was definitely paranoid schizophrenic. After they diagnosed me, they put me on an antipsychotic called "Zyprexa", roughly 20 milligrams. When I refused to take it, they admonished me and said they would do a forced injection! First of all, everyone should know, as I know now, that this violates your patient rights. They must prove that you are a danger to yourself or others in order to force meds. I didn't know this however, so I agreed to take the meds, knowing nothing about them. This is my first point, all people diagnosed with a mental illness should educate themnselves about the drugs they are taking, patient rights, etc. I have since been hospitalized 5 times and have learned to become an active participant in my rehabilitation. I let the doctor know what i think regarding medicines and treatment. If you don't take a stand, the mental health industry tends to ignore you and take advantage of your illness. Many times when I have been hospitalized, noone talks to me as if I'm an intelligent human being, but more like an unruly adolescent. You see, many times they would prescribe a medicine and I wouldn't take it, due to the fact that noone took the time to explain why I had to take it or listen to me when I tried to explain that the side effects outweighed the good that the medicine was intended to do. I am now on an injectable form of medication and have been outpatient committed , meaning that if I don't comply they can take me to court and have me hospitalized. At first, I didn't like the idea of injections, but the medicine is better (Risperidol) and I don't have to remember to take it. The first medicine they tried was Haldol, and anyone who has been on this knows that it isn't a pleasant drug. Haldol wracked my whole body with pain. It also did nothing foir my mental state. I complained to the doctor and he actually listened, he prescribed the Risperidol which is much better. I still don't put much faith in these medications, but at least the one I'm on causes no side effects. So remember, You must take a stand to be heard! I am fairly lucky , I've never heard voices or had hallucinations unless I'm in a psychotic state. Many of you deal with these symptoms daily. The world doesn't understand how tough you've got it , or how tough you are! But don't be sheep , take the lead in your treatment... Respect your doctors, but also make them respect you as a human being. Just wanted to share some of my experiences, thanks for reading.
Sincerely,
Nimzo
Wow, this sounds like my son's story. He was diagnosed 4 1/2 yrs ago, self induced by using drugs like way too much Ecstasy, but he admitted he had different feelings and thought the drugs would help, later learned they didn't. We were not sure what he had until he was diagnosed with Schiz/Paranoia, but all of the same feelings you have. I go to the doctors with him and to the hospital if he is admitted so I can help convey the symtoms to the hospital people or to his doctor, otherwise they give him more meds and they treat him as if the illness is talking. He is using injection treatments and it seem to be working after 4 1/2 yrs of zombie like son, and he was on Haldol and hated it. He would yell and threaten them and had to go the hospital for the shot. He stopped taking all meds and had a relaped. he's been on all of them including "make him feel good" meds to cope with the harsh side effects.
He's been in several hospitals to get him to conform to his meds. He's 23 and these events included myself of his mother and its very stressing. I had to have a forced action to get him to admit himself to the hospital with cops and ambulence. This worked in my favor, he was arrested for distrubance and the cops had him on record as a schiz and treated him nice at the time of arrest. They even called me. Otherwise, they could have used force!
He is now compliant and on the injections. I'm curious how long have you been on the infection, what dosage level, and what effects are you feeling?

You are right, if you don't feel right SPEAK UP and BE HEARD. If it wasn't for my son rebelling and finally hearing him, the problems he was complaining about was med side effects and not the illness which was being treated but he was still suffering the side effects, and he wanted some controll over his body and mind.

Its still a struggle sometimes but I feel we're getting there after 4 1/2 yrs!

Listen to other people having these symtoms and use them as insight to get better or keep your doctor informed.
I am so glad that someone actually took the time to post this because for a minute..I felt we (my family) were the only ones going through these problems. I can honestly say that I have absolutely no respect for the mental health system and the mental health physicians. Everytime my brother is hospitalized they experiment with him. its never the same drugs. They use him like a lab rat. When the side effects start kicking in, instead of giving him cogentin or benadryl..they say he's "restless and uncooperative" and hold him down against his will to give him haldol..which just makes his side effects worse. They completely shut the family out of the whole process. the Doctors won't have anything to do with us..which is so wrong because were the ones that have to deal with him when he gets out. They lie in these "hearings" and make up stories. they even treat the family like their crazy so I can only imagine what goes on behind those locked doors. When you try to report the injustice...it falls on deaf ears. everyone bows down to these Doctors as if they were God and they themselves think they are God as well. Something needs to be done. The patients and the family have rights and they are being violated. I am very angry at the whole world and at God for allowing such injustice to continue..
You gotta have faith and patience! This illness takes consistant care and support, not to mention the other areas of this illness like disability income, changing doctors, changing meds, insurance and food stamp subsidies, taxi services for non-drivers, etc...
As for the side effects, thats a whole issue in itself! Cogentin or benadryl are crap and don't do anything but blurr the side effects and create other side effects! My son flat out stopped using them and told the Doc not to prescribe the junk. There is no side effect medicene for Haldol! He hated it! They told him "you should not have any harsh side effects with Haldol and should only feel a little discomfort for a couple of hours or so..." RIGHT! They thought he was psychotic when he told them--like hell you say and he ended up going to the ER for temporary relief with a shot of cortizone or tylenol with codine to ease the side effects. Like I said earlier, he eventually rebelled and quit taking it and had a relapse so they could try something different. Haldol did stop his positive symtoms and work on some negetive symtoms, and worked good, but the dang side effects was just to much to bare for him to stay on it.
The doctors at different hospitals try different meds and each have their own way of dealing with the illness, which is different from his normal doctor.
He always tells me the stories at the hospital, once he told me they gave a different med that made him pass out and made him a zombie for 2 days. When he said they gave him the wrong persons med, they said sure and walked away and wanted raise his dosage.
Its a good idea to talk to the staff...
You're right tho, most treat mental illness with dark age techniques and disciplines.
KEEP THE RESPONSES COMING.

Haldol is a wicked med and has some serious side effects. My son started on this med when he was 19, and besides the above effects, he was quick to get angry, constantly complained of the pain, got violent at everyone including me! He would tell me "dad, take me the hospital for the shot, I don't want to yell at you. I may even want to swing at you and other people I see looking at me." He would curse at the top of lungs and pound the walls and floor to avoid hitting a person. They gave him Adivan, to make him feel good and that med has its own withdraw effects, they also gave him sleeping pills to prevent him from getting psychotic from not getting sleep. He was taking at minimum, 4-5 different pills to cope with this med.
I'm glad he's off this stuff. Always request the newer meds and talk to the Doctors! If you have a doctor, always call and let them know if you or your loved one has checked themself into the hospital for monitoring. You and tyour doctor will be able to communicate with the hospital staff and doctor to insure the correct treatment is being adminstered.
