The most common cause of inflammatory arthritis is Rheumatoid Arthritis but there's also palindromic, polymyalgia rheumatica, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s Syndrome, psoriatic arthritis and arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease. (among others)

There are so many different disorders that doctors can be squeamish about dx RA in it's early stages. Most of the time however, it is RA.

Make sure, despite the generic diagnosis, that you are getting treated with a disease modifying drug, a DMARD, like one of these: methotrexate, arava, plaquenil, minocin, enbrel, humira, remicade, orencia or rituxan. That way you're covered if it's RA or not.

Osteoarthritis is "wear n' tear" arthritis and is not inflammatory or autoimmune.
