Annie,

Try caffeine. That is the element in Excedrine that is probably killing your headaches. Caffeine will raise your heart rate, but will not thin your blood or cause any other negative outcomes as far as I know. You can get it at drug stores in the for of NoDoz and other preparations.

The fiornial w/o cod also has caffeine, and aspirin too. I believe each capsule or tablet has 325mg of aspirin. This is probably why the doc doesn't want you taking Excedrine, since they are essentially the very same med except for the butalbital.

Do you drink coffee? I'm just wondering if you are having caffeine related HAs. I also wonder if you are having rebound HAs. Taking excedrine/fiornial w/o cod type meds too often can actually cause more HAs.

Have you ever tried Imitrex? It's a vasoconstrictive med that works on the blood vessels. I use it for my migraines and it's usually very good. I am going to be trying Maxalt now also, since after so many years the Imitrex isn't always killing my migraines.

You guys have been so good about trying to help me with all this stuff and I really appreciated it! No I haven't had a brain scan. I don't have health ins. so I'm kind of limited on what I have done. Actually I think my headaches are stress related more than anything. I've been married three times and after each divorce the headaches got a little less but when I started having all this neck pain they started to get worse, and that's why I think my neck is the main thing causing them. I am supposed to be seeing a neurologist soon though so that should really help get to the bottom of what is really causing the headaches. Yes, I drink coffee in the morning and I do know what a caf. withdrawal headache feels like cause I've tried to stop caffine altogether. I had a sample of the Imitrex once and it worked great, but they are just too expensive so I guess I'll just have to wait till they come out with a generic. Again, guys, thanks so much for all your help.

Annie,

A couple more things:

-As a coffee drinker, be sure to take it in on days you might not normally drink coffee. I used to dring coffee at work daily, then I had the worst HAs on Saturdays. Every single Saturday. And it took me so long to figure out it was a WD HA.

-About Imitrex. I may be mistaken, but I believe sumatriptan (Imitrex) is now available in generic form. If not, you may be able to get them to provide it free. Contact the company and see if they have a program to supply meds to those who cannot afford them. This is very common, especially in the pain med industry.

This is a great site with the very best people. You will always be surprised at the level of help you get here. Please keep coming back and let us know how it goes.
