Hi everyone,
I'm on Neurontin and worry about long term effects to the kidneys, liver since it is an anti-seizure medication. Anyone been on it for a long time? Anyone have any info? Since Lyrica is the same family of drugs, I'm sure it will the same as Neurontin. Thanks for any info.

Deb, that's a very good question. To get your answer I would suggest that you ask your pharmacist. I found that doctors don't get that much training in pharmaceuticals itself but pharmacist do. Good luck and please do share what you learn.

Hi Deb,
I have a cousin that takes it for seizures and he has been on it for 10 yrs. he is fine, he gets regular check ups with blood work & all and has no negative long term problems at all. I have been on neurontin & lyrica for over 2 yrs now. Neurontin gave me a very short memory after a while so they switched me to lyrica almost a yr ago and the memory is better for the most part. If things are very chaotic I get some memory issues but nothing to bad for very long.

I will be very interested to watch this thread and see what others have to say. Good question!

God Bless

personally i don't believe that neurontin effects the kidneys as badly as the lyrica can.i have kidney and liver disease and when they placed me on neurontin the night of my first c spine surgery as my pain was just over the top,the doc told me right then that this would be completely safe for my kidneys.i was on that for 2 and a half years and never had kidney issues or any other issues from it.on the other hand,i tried lyrica about a year or so ago,and had some pretty profound side effects which did include a pronounced actual swelling of my already enlarged(by polycystic kidney disease) kidneys.really bad.it actually caused my right kidney to pop out of its normal spot within my upper back to where it now sits right alongside my right ribcage in the FRONT of my body.its just right there next to and partially under my ribcage now.once i went off lyrica, that swelling went away for me but the kidney is still sitting in the front.not enough room back there anymore for it i guess.lyrica also gave me a really insane 'up and down' type of double vision,NEVER ever had that happen before.it also effected my legs and ability to even walk a straight line down my hallway without always walking to the left and into the freaking wall.i do know that after my experience with lyrica,i did some research on it and found out they are now doing specific studies on lyricas efects on the eyes and the creatinine(an indicator of kidney function)now.i would really ask your pharmacist about this to get more specifics about it.i just personally had a very bad experience with lyrica but not neurontin at all.no side effects.but everyone is very different in just how they will actually respond to any given med,ya know?this is just what happened with me.

in most cases, alot comes down to just where and how a particular med gets metabolized(liver or kidneys)that would create a more high risk or impact on any given organ.just speak with your pharm.alot of people have had great experiences with lyrica.it really helped my pain alot but i could not stand to live with that level of side effects.good luck deb.Marcia
