I just had a fusion at L4-5 and a laminectomy at L3-4-5. I was on morphine in the hospital in an IV drip. When I was ready to come home, the doctor gave me pain medication and also medication for nerve pain. Part of my surgery was to decompress all the nerves; this involved touching them during the surgery, detangling them, etc. Some are bound to be unhappy about being touched and moved. They may not hurt immediately after the surgery but may start in a couple days, or a week or maybe even a month. So I was started on a medication for nerve pain (Lyrica) because the surgeon knows I am going to need it at some point in my recovery.
