Discussions that mention methotrexate

Arthritis board

Hi everyone, my husband has severe rheumatoid arthritis. Completely disabled from it. He is in constant pain everyday and is only 44 years old. He has tried almost every medication the Doctor has suggested. I cannot remember the name of all of them but all of the IV medications. He is currently on prednisone (spelling?) and methotrexate (spelling?). Very little relief. I was reading about a medication called Plaquenil and he has never been on it or has the Dr. suggested it. Does anyone here take it or have you taken it and what were the results. It is expensive? I want to suggest he be put on it to try but have not heard to much about it.
Thank you.
Plaquenil is an older DMARD (disease-modifying antirheumatic drug). Biologics are the DMARDs of choice now - those IV and home injection drugs. I was on plaq for several years, it worked ok, not great but not bad. I took it combination with other meds including methotrexate, arava and imuran. I stopped taking it to try Enbrel.

I think it's worth a shot to try plaq, especially if he's been on everything else and hasn't tried it yet. Generic plaquenil is very affordable.

The American College of Rheumatology has an info page on Plaq and and other DMARDs as well, you could check to see if there's anything else he hasn't been on yet. http://www.rheumatology.org/public/factsheets/hydroxychloroquine.asp?aud=pat

Good luck . . .
