Back Problems board

I am 36 years old and have been having lower back pain on and off for years. I started acting up this time over Thanksgiving and continued to get worse during the holidays. I stopped working out to give my back a rest and it didn't give it much relief. I went to my doctor and he put me on an 800MG of IBPROFEN 3x a day and Vicoden 5/500 tablet to be taken on a need be basis. He also told me to start Physical Therapy. Unfortunately, I had to exhaust most measures before getting a MRI. I have Blue Cross HMO not a PPO and the approvals seem to be much more difficult.
It got worse and I ended up going to the ER on Christmas morning when I was away visiting my sister in Seattle. They couldn't do much but 2 shots of Morphine to reduce the pain and prescribed a 5 day steroid to reduce the swelling.
My doctor continued me on a high 5 day dose of Methylprednisolone when I got back home. The pain was reduced quite a bit. The paper work then had finally been approved for my MRI and I still got it done.
The results are as follows:
FINDINGS: There is a broad-based sisc protrution at L5-S1. This extends slightly more to the left than the right . It measures approximately 16 mm at the base and extends approx. 6 mm into the canal and extends approx. 11 mm craniocaudad. There is moderate canal narrowing due to flattening of the thecal sac which is displaced posteriorly and to the right.
There is no significant foraminal stenosis at any level. The remainder of the intervertebral dsc spaces are within normal limits.
The conus is normal in size signal and position.
Vertebral body heights are well maintained. Both kidneys re present. The visualized portion of the sacroiliac joits are within normal limits.

CONCLUSION:
DEGENERATIVE DISEASE AT L5-S1 WITH BROAD-BASED DISC PROTRUSION PROJECTING MORE TO THE LEFT THAN TO THE RIGHT WITH MODERATE CANAL STENOSIS.

How bad is this and what should be my next step? Should I be concerned? I have experienced a lot of pain. However, I question myself at times if I am overreacting. What are your thoughts about my MRI findings?
Thank you in advance.
