Pain Management board

I have tried Colace, 30+mgs of fiber a day, tons of water and the recipe Dave shared. Because I have Colitis and IBS none of those worked at all. I take Miralax on a daily basis and it works great. It actually just became an OTC medication so if you are not having any luck with other products give that a try. It takes 2-4 days to work but once it does you are able to maintain soft stools on a regular basis. In fact I am to the point where I only have to take half the dosage because my stools became too soft. (sorry to be gross).

Fiber is very essential, be sure you are getting at least 30mg of natural fiber per day. Water is also essential as well.

If you have not had a BM in a week I would definately see your Primary care provider to be sure there's no impactment. I wouldn't wait any longer.
Oh my gosh Kathy what a horrible situation!! Your story certain serves as a reminder as to how serious constipation can be!

The more I think about the post I would think for the original poster a slighly elavated temp, vomiting and no bowel movement the nurse would have directed them to go the the hospital right away.

During my hospital stay after my last hip replacement revision in August I know I didn't have a BM for nearly a week. The nurses were freaking out but I know my body quite well. My bowel sounds were fine. They checked it on every shift after about the 3rd day. The problem was they were not giving me my Miralax at first, which I have to have, and had me on a pure liquid diet for 4 days then a soft but clear diet for 2 more! I was on probably 4 times higher amount of pain medications than what I took prior so my bowel tract itself wasn't going anywhere. But as you said, I could pass gas LOL!

Thankfully when I was able to go it was a very soft stool it was just a matter of time waiting for the Miralax to actually work.

I'm sorry you had to go through what you did but thanks for shedding light on just how serious constipation can be!
Babs I really suggest the Miralax, once you are on it daily you go daily and won't need an enema. I really hate to sound like a broken record but I suffer so bad from it, my stools are hard and large (sorry) that I can't pass them. Oh Lord and the pain!!! It's like going into labor!

I think the recipe Dave shared works well for a lot of people too so you might consider that. My doctor told me as long as the stool is not hard and dry then it is OK for a person to be considered regular if they go every other day.

Did you know you can pass out from having a bowel movement? I was watching a documentary show on health where this guy would pass out after having a BM. Here it caused his BP to lower from straining it would cause him to pass out!

Hey Nu2Patch! Miralax is a powder. A normal dosage is 17grams. It's about one rounded tablespoon but comes with a premeasured cup like cough medicines do. It also comes in pre-measured packages which are convienant with travel as the bottle can be huge dependig on what is prescribed.
It is tasteless but if you mix it with water it does have that Gatoraid feel to it. I drink it with coffee.

It was just announced by the DEA and I saw on a TV commercial that it is now and over the counter medicine! I don't know the cost as I've not yet seen it hit the shelves yet but your best bet is to talk to any pharmacy to see if they have the OTC version in and the cost. I would check like Walmart Pharmacy or Costco, they seem pretty cheap on meds, even regular OTC meds.

It might be cheaper to have your doctor to prescribe it though. I pay $5 co pay but I'm also mandated to pay that much so I have no clue what the pharm price is but it has to be no more than $20 for a month's supply. It's probably less as my husband got a small bottle, like half the size of mine. for a recent colonoscopy (they use that now for cleansing the colon pre test) and it was the same price.

[COLOR="Purple"]Here's a copy of Dave's Paste he posted:

Yakima Fruit Paste
used in hospice care for terminal high dose patients

DOSE: 1-2 tablespoons per day

1 pound prunes
1 pound raisins-pitted
1 pound figs
4 oz senna tea (look in your health food store, it looks like a bunch of leaves)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup lemon juice

1. Prepare tea-use about 2 1/2 cups boiled water added to tea and steep 5 minutes.
2. Strain tea to remove tea leaves and add only 1 pint tea to a large pot, then add fruit.
3. Boil fruit and tea for 5 minutes.
4. Remove from heat and add sugar & lemon juice. Allow to cool.
5. Use hand mixer or food processor to blend fruit mixture into smooth paste.
6. Place in plastic container and place in freezer. (Paste will not freeze but will keep forever in freezer).
7. Spoon out what you require each day.

Enjoy eating it straight off the spoon.
Spread it on toast or add hot water and make a drink.

* If the fruit paste is not working (you are not having bowel movements) then you need to increase the amount of fruit paste you are taking.

* If the fruit paste makes you have very loose stools then you need to cut down on the amount of fruit paste you are taking. Perhaps even taking it every other day in some cases.

This stuff does work, but it's an all day project t make a 3 month supply and will cost about 40 bucks to make. I try to mix things up a bit but always use something daily.
