Discussions that mention morphine

Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia board

My mother-in-law has been in a nursing home with Alzheimer's for 9 years. She is nearing the end, we think. She started refusing food the beginning of this month. She hasn't spoken & barely opened her eyes for the last 2 years.

She is down to 117 pounds. She drinks about 13 oz. of thickened liquids twice a day & that is all. She doesn't seem to be in pain. She has a sore on her bottom that is getting better with attention, but now her feet are threatening to break down.

You know how you brace yourself for the end...adrenaline begins flowing & she hangs on. We didn't plan any Easter because we were thinking family would have to be coming in...sometime....can anyone tell us how long can a person survive on such minimal intake? What can we expect in the coming days? Her comfort is foremost to us & morphine is on order is she needs it. There will be such a void when she is gone. Any insight?

Sadly, Kathy
