Discussions that mention morphine

Pain Management board

I've never taken oxycontin. How does this compare to Dilaudid, vicodin, darvocet, or morphine. I'm just trying to figure out the side-effects and just what I should expect when I get it. The pharmacy has to order it so I'll get it Tuesday. I am now 6 months post-op spinal fusion of T10-L1. Up until now the dilaudid was working great, but I am now having that same pain above the incision, and below the incision. So my PM doctor gave me methadone 10mg twice a say and the n 8mg of dilaudid as needed for breakthrough pain. But the 10mg i took before i went to bed kept me WIDE AWAKE. And I couldnt stop moving. Rolling my ankled, wrists, and neck cracking the joints...i couldnt stop. I tried 5mg but it made me feel sick and didnt help with the pain. Now I'm starting on Oxycontin 10-20mg 2-3 times a day (depending on how well, or not well it works for me...as well as how long it lasts) So this is my new regimen

Oxycontin:10-20mg--->2-3 times a day
Dilaudid: 8mg--->3-4 times a day as needed for breakthrough pain.
Zofran: Can't remember the dosage-->2-3 times a day as needed for nausea
Flexeril: 10mg--->3 times a day (muscle relaxant)
Dulcolax 5mg---> as needed for constipation

Thanks so much!

OC is a great painkiller. Just don't take more than you're supposed to, or you'll wind up with a new set of problems.

Personally, I prefer long acting Morphine with oxycodone for breakthrough. Kadian works really well, and actually lasts as long as the manufacturer claims it does (about 12 hours). OC wears of in about 8 hours. It was designed to last 12 hours, but it just doesn't. That's why it's so abused and people run out early. As long as your doctor knows this, and writes the scrip for 8 hours instead of 12, it should work well for you.
