:bouncing: May I say that all this regurgitation of conventional wisdom make me sad? Very sad? Almost ill? A low-carb diet does NOT spell malnutrition. It is NOT unhealthy. The main restriction is on refined sugars and white flour. What on earth can be unhealthy about eating mainly fresh vegetables and some protein for two weeks?

If a person follows it correctly, it is basically an elimination diet. Like the kind your doctor will put you on to discover food allergies and sensitivities. You basically START OUT eating lots of vegetables and protein. BUT it CAN be done in a vegetarian diet! The emphasis is on LOW carb -- not HIGH PROTEIN. You slowly add back food items and monitor your body's reaction to a new food. Not every body is the same, so some people can handle the new food better than others. Atkins has a general guideline he calls a "carb ladder." Each week after Induction (the first 14 days), you add back 5 net grams of the next level of these new foods. Not only do you learn what your body will and won't tolerate, you're essentially retraining your system to accept it by small doses-- BUILDING tolerance.

Level 1 (20 grams net carbs): protein, limited carbs, and healthy fats (including hard cheeses)
lvl 2 (25g): more salad and other vegetables on the acceptable foods list
lvl 3 (30g): fresh cheeses (as well as more aged cheese)
lvl 4 (35g): seeds and nuts
lvl 5 (40g): berries and melons
lvl 6 (45g): wine and other spirits low in carbs
lvl 7 (50g): legumes
lvl 8 (55g): fruits other than berries and melons
lvl 9 (60g): starchy vegetables
lvl 10 (65g): whole grains

At the end of the process you're eating a very healthy diet that no nutritionist will argue with! There is a really good message forum at eScribe and the Atkins Center has a very informative site that covers just about any question you may have.

AND, of course, Dr. Atkins recommends strongly that you exercise and drink lots of water.

NOTE: THE FIRST THREE DAYS OR SO OF EATING LOW CARB IS AWFUL!!! YOU'LL FEEL WEAK/HUNGRY AND ALL WASHED OUT (your body will be "in detox" like an alcoholic)-- TOUGH IT OUT AND TAKE SOME POTASSIUM. YOU'LL BE REWARDED WITH LOTS OF ENERGY AND A GENERAL FEELING OF WELLNESS!!!
I've been on the diet for a month or 2 now...I've lost over 20lbs, I've gained muscle (or have more definition), my arms used to be flat (muscle-wise) now there's a noticeable bulge. I was NEVER able to work up the motivation to exercise...now I exercise 5 times a week, 1 hour of cardio 1 hour of weight training.

There is a very good chance that the weight loss resulted from malnutrition. Unfortunately, those miracle results are what make this diet so popular.

the heck it is malnutrition, I'm healthier now than I was and I'm eating MORE vegetables and crap than I was before.

Its not about restricting carbs, its about restricting bad carbs

(I know you weren't insulting low carbing btw)
anyway, I was drinking 2-3 pops a day...full of caffeine and other junk. I got on the Atkins plan and have felt no negative effects.
These obvious PETA vegans (not you) have been saying that you'll be super lazy, unable to think clearly etc etc.
let me share something with you...a couple weeks ago I was out with my friends, we went to burger king and I ordered a friggin whopper meal...I felt lazy all day when I got home, I was unable to think clearly when playing my games. I didn't win a single Starcraft game. hmmmmm. I haven't deviated from the Atkins plan since.

It's starvation. That's why it has to be lifelong to work.

holy crap, if this is starving...maybe I should stop donating to funds that help starving children cause I'm full EVERYDAY. I don't understand why people think that the plan is so hard to follow, I eat such good foods. If you want chocolate there's low carb chocolate and it tastes damn good. The Atkins Morning Start cereal is great! The Atkins website details some great food and how to make it.

btw- Atkins died because he fell and some other stuff...not because of his plan, don't pay attention to PETA
PETA doesn't care about our health...they care about teh cuuuute wittle amimals. Oh, and don't forget PETA's donation of $2 million to the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine.
