Too much "sodium" (salt) will cause fluid retention. Omit salt in cooking and at the table. Choose low sodium foods. Elevate feet/legs as much as possible. Exercise also helps keep fluid from building up. Be sure he is getting plenty of potassium, orange juice is good. Too little potassium is bad and too much is bad, tread lightly until you find out what his potassium level is, however, a glass of orange juice for breakfast should be fine.

If he is on bloodpressure medication, that could be the cause also. Some meds have swelling of feet as a side effect.
