Discussions that mention potassium

OuttoLunch,

So true.
Man has evolved over thousands of millennia to conserve salt to the point where desert herdman excrete almost none at all, neither in sweat nor in urine.

Without our intricate kidneys being so constructed as to remove as much potassium as possible while conserving every milligram of sodium, man would long ago have disappeared from the Earth.

So then what does "clever" man do...he spits in the face of evolution and decides to eat a diet with more sodium than an entire TRIBE of his ancestors ever ate, while restricting his potassium intake.
Results: hypertension and end-stage kidney disease rampant in "civilized" society.

Man spits in the face of millions of years of evolution all the time, especially when it comes to our eating habits. We eat so many foods or do things to them that are bad for us and then we wonder why we have so many health problems. And the health care system preys on people telling them the answer to their problems can be found in a pill. I'm a big believer in science, but I have more confidence in the healing power of food than anything manufactured in the laboratory. If I had no ethics, I'd have been a doctor. You can make a lot of money as a cardiologist, nephrologist (kidneys), or dermatologist treating problems that are so easily prevented.
