Discussions that mention potassium

I wasn't sure where to post this so I thought I'd try here.

My husband has HBP and is on meds. The doctor has not been able to get his potassium level up so he did a 24 hour urine test.

The doctor called today and says he is setting up an appointment with another doctor (can't remember what they are called) because the 24 hr test showed no potassium lost in the urine but yet his potassium level is remaing low.

Can anyone tell me if they have this problem and what it may be ?

My husband has had a lot of problems with low potassium as well-he is on several diuretics. What we have learned form several trips to the ER for low potassium is that you also have to be aware of magnesium levels as well. If you are low on magnesium, no matter how much patassium you take your levels will not increase. Once the magenisum is at the right level then the potassium levels out. My husband takes magnesium daily (3x a day) as well as his potassium-since we have been keeping watch on both levels he has not had any low potassium problems. It was an ER doc that pointed this out to my husband. Soo you might bring this up with your husband's Dr. Hope you get things worked out! Mary Jo
It is possible to out-salt the potassium. Watch the sodium intake.
Hi Anna. I am also magnesium and potassium deficient and have to take prescriptions for both. No cause has been found in my case.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.
Bannanas are full of potassium!
I had low potasium couple times which made my heart rate high and high blood pressure,(I have Hypertension and high rate all the time), so they told me to eat a bannana at least once a day.
