Could be many causes, but two of the most common are: Insufficient circulation and Metobolic deficiencys. Usually when the cramps are do to insufficient circulation they typically occur at night, but may also occur during exercise. The most common metabolic deficiency that can cause leg cramping is low potassium. Potassium is one of the two primary molecules that control how our muscles work. Also, in addition to potassium, sodium works to initiate muscle contraction and an imbalance or lack of these two salts will result in cramping. I experienced bad leg cramping when I was pregnant and doc just told me to sleep with my legs propped up on a pillow and to eat a couple of bananas each day.....problem was gone.
